Description

Don’t Throw Away Your Old PC — This OS Might Surprise You! In this video, I’m testing Desert OS, a lightweight Linux distro built around XFCE, on a 12-year-old Dell OptiPlex 7020 with a Core i5-4590 and just 4GB of RAM. But Desert OS doesn’t look like your typical XFCE distro. It completely transforms XFCE with a surprisingly modern, macOS-inspired interface, a clean dock, custom themes, Hot Corners, video wallpapers, and even a collection of its own Desert-branded apps. Of course, looking good is one thing. Actually running well on old hardware is another. So I put Desert OS through some real-world testing: RAM usage, Chromium with multiple tabs, 1080p YouTube playback, its Desert Software app store, and even Minecraft 1.8.9. So, can Desert OS actually turn an old PC into something useful again? And can a heavily customized XFCE desktop still stay lightweight? Let’s find out.
