Description

The Complete Life of Yogi Naraharinath | The Wandering Yogi Who Saved Nepal's History | Gyankunda He gave up his birth name and his family for the saffron robes of a Gorakhnath yogi, and then spent a lifetime walking across the Himalaya, rescuing crumbling manuscripts and copper inscriptions that would otherwise have vanished forever. Without him, whole chapters of Nepal's history would simply be blank. Yogi Naraharinath (1915–2003), born Balbir Singh Thapa in Kalikot in the Karnali region, took sannyasa at the Chandannath temple in Jumla and became a yogi of the Nath tradition of Gorakhnath. He is remembered above all as a historian-collector: travelling across Nepal and beyond, he gathered, deciphered, and published vast numbers of genealogies, royal documents, and inscriptions, credited with hundreds of works that preserved primary sources for the study of Nepali history. A fierce nationalist and devout Hindu, he was an outspoken public figure who was even jailed for his political stands, and he came to be nicknamed "the walking Pashupatinath." He died in 2003 at the age of eighty-eight at Mrigasthali, beside the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. This biography covers his full life, his birth and renunciation, his life in the Nath tradition of Gorakhnath, his monumental work collecting and publishing Nepal's historical documents, his nationalism and public activism, and his legacy as one of the great preservers of Nepal's historical record. मुख्य स्रोतहरू / KEY SOURCES (for verification):- • Yogi Naraharinath (ed.), "Itihas Prakash" and "Sandhipatra Sangraha" – his own collected historical documents (primary source) • "Two yogis, two countries," The Kathmandu Post – https://kathmandupost.com/opinion/2017/07/04/two-yogis-two-countries • Documenta Nepalica (Heidelberg Academy of Sciences) – https://nepalica.hadw-bw.de • Yogi Naraharinath – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yogi_Naraharinath Some of the historical and genealogical claims associated with him (for example, certain traditional datings drawn from chronicle sources) are debated among scholars; the video notes these as contested rather than settled.
