Description

The Complete Life of Rana Bahadur Shah | The King Who Gave Up His Crown and Paid With His Life | Gyankunda He became king before he could walk, gave up his throne at the height of his power for the woman he loved, and was finally cut down by his own brother's sword in open court. Few lives in Nepal's history rose and fell as violently as his. Rana Bahadur Shah (1775–1806) was the third king of unified Nepal, son of Pratap Singh Shah. He came to the throne as an infant of about two and a half in 1777, under the regency first of his mother, Queen Rajendra Lakshmi, and then of his uncle, Prince Bahadur Shah, years in which Nepal's borders expanded dramatically even as the court was consumed by rival regents. Coming of age in 1794, he reconstituted the government to strip his uncle of power. His later reign turned tragic: infatuated with a Brahman widow, Kantavati, he cleared the way to the throne for their son Girvan Yuddha, and after her death in 1799 he abdicated and retired to Banaras. Returning in 1804, he seized power once more as Mukhtiyar, until, in 1806, he was assassinated in open court by his half-brother, Sher Bahadur Shah. This biography covers his full life, his infant accession, the Rajendra Lakshmi and Bahadur Shah regency struggle, his coming of age, the Kantavati episode and his abdication, his exile in Banaras, his return as Mukhtiyar, and his violent death, along with the rise of Bhimsen Thapa in his orbit. मुख्य स्रोतहरू / KEY SOURCES (for verification):- • Rishikesh Shaha, "Modern Nepal: A Political History" (vol.
