Description
The Complete Life of Chandra Shamsher Rana | The Autocrat Who Freed 60,000 Slaves | Gyankunda
Chandra Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana ruled Nepal as its most powerful Rana Prime Minister, holding office for over two decades in the early twentieth century. In that time he abolished slavery outright, banned the practice of sati, and built Nepal's first modern college, and yet, at the very same time, he ran one of the most tightly controlled autocracies in Nepali history, deliberately blocking the spread of public education to keep power inside his own family.
This is his full story: his rise to the premiership through the 1901 palace coup alongside his brothers Khadga Shamsher and Bhim Shamsher; his reforms, the 1924 abolition of slavery, funded through the Pashupatinath temple treasury, that freed tens of thousands of people; the ban on sati; the founding of Tri-Chandra College in 1975 B.S.; his controversial 1923 treaty with British India; Nepal's major contribution of Gurkha soldiers during the First World War; his 1908 honorary doctorate from Oxford; and the family dynamics, his sons Mohan, Baber, Kaiser, Singha and Krishna Shamsher, and the rivalry tied to his daughter's marriage into the ruling family of Bajhang.
Throughout, this video gives Chandra Shamsher an honest both-sides treatment, his genuinely humane reforms are stated plainly, while his authoritarian rule and self-interested motives (his own visit to Europe is on record as a major spur for reform) are treated with equal honesty. Popular sayings associated with him, like "Phistey Maharaj" and "चन्द्रे हाँस्यो त नास्यो", are included and clearly flagged as folklore rather than fact.

Where sources genuinely disagree (the exact number of slaves freed, the degree of Chandra's personal role versus his brothers' in the 1901 coup, the true motivation behind his reforms), this video presents the range of figures and interpretations rather than asserting one as settled fact.
