Description
The fridge. One sniff. The milk turned two days ago.
One change: you get a bloodhound's nose. A normal nose has about six million scent receptors; you have three hundred million. Smell stops being a flavour and becomes a map: every person leaves a trail, every object leaves a ribbon. You find a teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic pools, lost keys under the couch, a burning toast before the alarm and who touched the door this morning (plus what they had for breakfast). You follow a two-hour-old trail across a field, name every spice in a secret soup and solve a burglary from cheap cologne, a cat and a toaster. Hide and seek is over. Surprise parties are ruined.
But a nose is not a brain: you have one afternoon to learn what dogs spend years on (that jar is a skunk), and trying to sniff like a dog ends with you on the floor. A bigger nose does not come with an off switch either. The bus, the locker room and the perfume aisle all arrive at full volume, and dinner smells exactly like what it is. Then the offers pour in (an airport, a hospital, a TV show) and you reach the final of the World Sniff Cup: ten covered cups, one left, a hundred thousand dollars. And then the phone rings. A boy is missing in a rainy forest, and the police dogs lost his trail at the river.
Any nose can find a trail. Only a person chooses to follow it.

This is a fictional "what if" story: Dr. Ross, Sam, Officer Dana, Tim, the World Sniff Cup and the Pine Ridge search are made up. A real person cannot get a dog's nose, and a real search for a missing child is a job for professionals, so please don't go into a forest at night. Numbers are rounded and some are popular estimates.
