Why is the Netherlands Called Holland? 🇳🇱 Why Dutch? 🤯

Why is the Netherlands often called Holland and why are its people called Dutch? 🇳🇱 The official name of the country is the Netherlands, meaning “low lands” because almost a third of it lies below sea level. Without its dikes, pumps and advanced flood-control systems, around 60% of the country could end up underwater 🌊 Holland is actually only one historic region, now divided into North Holland and South Holland, two of the Netherlands’ 12 provinces. This wealthy region includes Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague and became the center of Dutch trade, seafaring and colonial expansion. As a result, the entire country became widely known as Holland. The word “Dutch” originally referred more broadly to Germanic-speaking people and shares the same linguistic root as the German word “Deutsch.” Today, it refers specifically to people from the Netherlands, although in Dutch they call themselves “Nederlanders” #netherlands #holland #dutch #amsterdam #rotterdam #thehague #border #dutchpeople #northholland #southholland #dutchhistory #europeanhistory #europe #weirdborders #borders #island #history #geography #maps #learn
