Description

Could King Tut’s tomb continue beyond its painted walls? Newly published research combines ground-penetrating radar, microgravity measurements and other investigations to examine possible hidden spaces beyond Tutankhamun’s burial chamber. More than a century after Howard Carter discovered the tomb, its boundaries remain the subject of debate. This documentary examines the September 2026 research into KV62 in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings: what researchers measured, why they believe the tomb could be larger than its known layout, and how the findings connect to the search for Queen Nefertiti’s missing burial. We follow the evidence from the decorated walls to the surrounding rock, compare the new interpretation with earlier investigations, and explain what would be needed to establish whether additional chambers really exist. Could these be storage rooms, part of an earlier royal burial, or features with another explanation? RESEARCH CONTEXT The 2026 publication includes fieldwork conducted in 2023–2024 and reviews earlier investigations. The hidden-chamber hypothesis dates back to 2015. The latest evidence does not confirm Nefertiti’s tomb, identify the contents of any proposed chambers, or establish that a robot has entered them.
