Description

How did the first cities on Earth actually begin and what made them different from ordinary settlements? In this video we explore some of the earliest and most important cities in human history from Jericho and Çatalhöyük to Uruk, Ur, Mohenjo-daro, Babylon, Troy, and Memphis. These ancient cities reveal how density, infrastructure, trade, geography, religion, and political power gradually transformed permanent settlements into complex urban systems. Looking at the origins of urban planning also shows that many challenges modern cities face today began thousands of years ago. #ancientcities #urbanplanning #explained #history Jericho: One of humanity’s earliest permanent settlements blurred the line between village and city. Catalhoyuk: A dense settlement functioned with rooftops instead of conventional streets. Uruk: Population, trade, administration and institutions formed one of the earliest true urban systems. Ur: Dense neighborhoods and courtyard houses developed around monumental religious centers. Mohenjo-daro: Advanced water systems and drainage made infrastructure central to everyday urban life. Babylon: Monumental roads, gates, and buildings turned urban design into a symbol of power. Troy: Geography, defense and repeated rebuilding continuously reshaped the ancient settlement. Memphis: Its strategic position on the Nile helped connect administration, transportation, trade and religion. Which of these ancient cities surprised you the most? And which early city should I cover next? Let me know in the comments and subscribe for more urban planning, cities and infrastructure explained! I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone. On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest. If you want to better understand your environment, join a conscious conversation about cities, and explore these living organisms with me, you're in the right place.
