Every City That's SINKING Right Now Explained

Which cities are actually sinking into the ground right now, and why does it keep happening? Is Mexico City really sinking 20 inches a year? Why is Jakarta building a whole new capital? This video answers all of that. As a real urban planner, i'm breaking down the cities losing ground beneath the right now, from Houston's cracked highways to the reason Tokyo actually stopped sinking for good. #urbanplanning #climatechange #explained Houston: The city sank over 10 feet in the 20th century and it's still cracking foundations today. New Orleans: Its flood walls are sinking faster than the water they're supposed to hold back. Norfolk: A 35 million year old meteor crater is slowly dragging the entire naval base underwater. Venice: The sinking barely measures an inch a year and it's still not enough to save it. Mexico City: The fastest sinking major city on earth, and it's not even close. Bangkok: The one city on this list that actually reversed its own sinking. Jakarta: Sinking so badly that entire country is building a new capital from scratch. Tokyo: Proof that this problem has a fix, and Japan already found it decades ago. Which of these cities surprised you the most? Let me know in the comments! I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone. On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest.
