Description

Have you ever wondered what actually separates a street from an avenue, boulevard, or road? And why do some city streets feel safe and walkable while others seem designed only to move cars? In this video, I break down the real logic behind street types, road hierarchy, and urban street design, from local streets and arterials to some of the strangest streets found in real cities. The name on the street sign can be surprisingly misleading, because what a street is designed to do tells you much more about how it actually works. And by the end, a few of these examples may completely change what you think a “street” can be. #city #street #explained Production Note: This video's research and script were personally prepared by me, a professional urban planner. The video editing was completed by a human editor I work with. Text-to-speech was used only for narration to provide a clearer, consistent voice and avoid recording issues. All third-party visual materials are used where applicable for educational, commentary, criticism, and transformative purposes, with appropriate attribution when required and in accordance with applicable fair use principles. Street vs Avenue vs Boulevard vs Road: Why familiar street names don't follow one universal rule, and what actually defines a street. Local / Residential Street: The low-speed, access-focused streets that make up most of the road network but carry surprisingly little traffic. The Arterial: A high-capacity urban road that tries to combine traffic movement with direct access, often with dangerous consequences. The Freeway: A road built almost entirely for mobility, using full access control to remove driveways, crossings, and traffic signals. The Stroad: The infamous street-road hybrid that tries to move cars quickly while serving businesses and usually does neither job well. Main Street / High Street: A slower commercial street designed around destinations, storefronts, pedestrians, and activity rather than through traffic. The Multiway Boulevard: A massive boulevard that separates fast through traffic from slower local access using medians and side lanes. The Alley: The overlooked back street used for deliveries, garages, services, housing, and sometimes entirely new public spaces. The Woonerf / Shared Street: A curbless street where pedestrians dominate the space and cars are treated as slow-moving guests. The Pedestrian Mall: What happens when cities remove cars from commercial streets, and why the strategy succeeds in some places but fails in others. The Stepped Street: Real public streets built entirely as staircases where steep terrain makes ordinary vehicle access impossible. Which street type surprised you the most? And what type of street do you actually live on? Let me know in the comments, and subscribe for more urban planning and city design explained! I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone. On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest. If you want to better understand your environment, join a conscious conversation about cities, and explore these living organisms with me, you're in the right place.
