Description

Why is Phoenix, Arizona actually a terrible place to build a city of nearly 5 million people? Is Phoenix running out of water? Why does it have almost no public transit, and why do its own streets feel impossible to survive on foot? This video answers exactly that. As a real urban planner, i'm breaking down why Phoenix shouldn't exist in its current form, from the water crisis and the endless sprawl to the ground literally cracking open beneath it. #urbanplanning #phoenix #explained Sprawl: Phoenix went from 17 square miles to over 500, and it still hasn't stopped growing outward. Car Dependency: Ten billion vehicle miles a year, and Phoenix just voted for even more freeway lanes. Weak Transit: Only 2% of commutes happen on transit, and the city just scrapped its own light rail extension. Stroads: Indian School Road is now the most dangerous street for pedestrians in the entire state. Urban Heat Island: Phoenix hit 110 degrees for 31 straight days, hot enough for the pavement to burn skin. Water Scarcity: Arizona had to freeze new construction because Phoenix doesn't have the water to support it. Golf, Lakes & Pools: Maricopa County's golf courses alone use more water than any county in America. Subsidence & Earth Fissures: Phoenix pumped so much water out of the ground that the earth is now cracking open. Do you think Phoenix can actually survive long term? Let me know in the comments! I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone. On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest. If you want to better understand your environment, join a conscious conversation about cities, and explore these living organisms with me, you're in the right place.
