Description

In November 1957, a state trooper in the tiny hamlet of Apalachin, New York, noticed a butcher hauling an enormous meat order up a hillside, and exposed the American Mafia to the world. But Apalachin was only one stop on the mob's map of Appalachia. In this video, we count down 10 places in Appalachia where organized crime once held real power: the coal towns, mill towns, river cities and racetracks of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and New York. From the dress factories of Hazleton and the numbers rackets of East Liberty, to the Pittsburgh crime family's deadly early years, the Youngstown car-bomb wars, the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre family, the Mannarino brothers' guns-for-Castro plot, and "wide-open" Wheeling under Big Bill Lias. Then Russell Bufalino, the quiet boss from Kingston portrayed in The Irishman, and the small coal town of Pittston, where one family ran the coal, the garment factories and the union for almost a century. Real names. Real dates. True history from the hills. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The Apalachin Meeting That Exposed the Mafia 1:39 #10 Hazleton, Pennsylvania 3:22 #9 East Liberty, Pittsburgh 4:55 #8 The Hill District, Pittsburgh 6:31 #7 Youngstown, Ohio 8:06 #6 Scranton & Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania 9:39 #5 New Kensington, Pennsylvania 11:21 #4 Apalachin, New York 13:03 #3 Wheeling, West Virginia 14:58 #2 Kingston, Pennsylvania 16:42 #1 Pittston, Pennsylvania 18:41 Final Thoughts 📌 In this video: - The 1957 Apalachin meeting and J.
