Description

About 125 miles beneath the Appalachian Mountains of New England sits a blob of hot rock the size of a small country, and it's slowly moving toward New York. Scientists call it the Northern Appalachian Anomaly. Until recently, nobody knew it existed. In this video, we explore what's really hidden beneath the Appalachian Mountains, and how scientists finally found out without drilling a single hole. Using seismic tomography, essentially a CT scan of the planet built from earthquake waves, the EarthScope project mapped North America in detail for the first time. What it found changed everything. The underside of the continent is "dripping" into the mantle. A slow mantle wave has been crawling across North America for tens of millions of years. There are hidden extinct volcanoes in Virginia. And a dead ocean plate called the Farallon slab is still eating away at the continent from 400 miles down. It may even explain why the Appalachians are still standing after 290 million years. 📍 In this video: - Why we can't simply drill down to find out - How earthquakes let scientists X-ray the Earth - The EarthScope project that scanned an entire continent - The Northern Appalachian Anomaly beneath New England - Lithospheric dripping and the "mantle wave" - Why the hot spot is drifting toward New York - The 48-million-year-old volcanoes of Virginia - Why the Appalachians haven't eroded away - The 2025 discovery that North America is dripping - The Appalachians' twins in Scotland, Scandinavia and Morocco ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 The hot blob beneath New England 0:40 Why we can't dig down 1:36 Listening to earthquakes: seismic tomography 2:46 EarthScope scans a continent 3:40 A hot spot where none should exist 4:44 How a continent can drip 6:41 A mantle wave across North America 7:53 Heading toward New York 9:00 The thin spot under the Appalachians 9:57 The hidden volcanoes of Virginia 11:12 Why the Appalachians are still standing 12:56 2025: North America is dripping 15:29 The headlines vs the science 16:54 More secrets of the Appalachians 18:24 What's really beneath the mountains What surprised you most about what's hidden beneath the Appalachians?
