Description

America is a young country — that's what school tells you, and the map they hand you starts at the coastline in 1607. It doesn't mention the structures standing here two thousand years before anyone crossed the Atlantic, that archaeologists still cannot fully explain. A fifty-acre earthwork aligned to all eight extremes of an 18.6-year lunar cycle, built by people with no writing. A mile and a quarter of wall enclosing fifty acres where nobody ever lived. A bird made of white quartz that can only be read from the air. A burial mound sitting in a traffic circle outside a supermarket. And a Mississippian capital where more than ninety percent of the ground has never been dug. Twenty sites, seven states, three thousand years. Each with location, access conditions, nearest hospital, and who it's actually for. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The map they hand you starts in 1607 0:46 Serpent Mound, OH 2:01 Newark Earthworks, OH 3:02 Mound City, OH 3:54 Flint Ridge, OH 4:47 Miamisburg Mound, OH 5:32 Portsmouth Earthworks, OH/KY 6:29 Six in — what's still coming 6:42 Grave Creek Mound, WV 7:42 Criel Mound, WV 8:32 Mount Horeb Earthworks, KY 9:20 Indian Fort Mountain, KY 10:06 Ely Mound, VA 11:01 Old Stone Fort, TN 11:52 Bat Creek Mound, TN 12:42 Chota, TN 13:27 Fourteen down 13:43 Judaculla Rock, NC 14:33 Nikwasi Mound, NC 15:20 Track Rock Gap, GA 16:10 Fort Mountain, GA 17:02 Rock Eagle Effigy, GA 17:50 Etowah Mounds, GA 18:52 Before you visit any of these ⚠️ BEFORE YOU GO — THREE THINGS 1. Check the state historic site or park for access conditions. Several are seasonal and a few (Ely Mound) are on private land where permission is the condition of the site still existing. 2. Contact the relevant Tribal Historic Preservation Office before visiting any site with Native cultural material. That is not optional. 3. Read one paper before you arrive. These places reward people who show up prepared. 🔎 ON THE CONTESTED ONES Track Rock Gap's terraces were publicly claimed in 2012 as the work of Maya refugees. The Forest Service and virtually every southeastern archaeologist rejected it. The Bat Creek Stone is now accepted by most specialists as a 19th-century forgery. Both are in here because of what the arguments reveal, not because they hold up. 👇 Which would you actually visit?
