Description

In the summer of 1993 a ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains let himself into a cottage that had been empty for a year and found the table still set. Curtains on the rails. Beds made. Photographs on the walls. Whole streets of them. Nobody had died. Nobody had been driven out at gunpoint. The families who owned those houses had signed a piece of paper in the 1930s, and the paper had run out. A disaster leaves something behind — a date, a headline, a hole in the ground. You can stand at the spot and read the report. These ten leave nothing. No confrontation, no eviction notice anybody can point at, no moment where a community ends. Because in these mountains people were rarely simply removed. Removing people makes a story, and a story makes a court case. So there was a quieter option. You move the deed. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The table was still set 0:39 Why absence was paperwork 1:59 10. Nuttallburg, West Virginia 3:43 9. Thurmond, West Virginia 5:09 8. Lilly, West Virginia 6:30 7. The buildings are gone, the ground is under water, the record was never made. Number one isn't a mystery at all. Every deed exists. Every family is named. Every cemetery is mapped and the graves have headstones. The land has never left federal hands. The question there isn't where anybody went. It's why, eighty years on, the only way to visit them is by boat. 👇 Which of the ten do we already know the answer to and are simply choosing not to act on? 🔔 Subscribe. #Appalachia #WestVirginia #Elkmont #BlairMountain #RoadToNowhere #GhostTowns #AbandonedPlaces #Tennessee #Kentucky #NorthCarolina
