Description
🏛️ Before Valley Heights became a railway station, it was one of the most important stopping places on the road to the Blue Mountains.
Long before trains crossed the mountains, weary travellers, explorers, soldiers, convicts and bullock drays all paused in Fitzgerald’s Valley. Here stood the Valley Inn—later known as the Woolpack Inn, the Welcome Inn, and finally Wyoming.
Built in 1831 by Alexander Fraser, this remarkable roadside inn welcomed thousands of travellers for more than a century. Governors stopped here. Waterloo veteran Joseph James proudly displayed his medal behind the bar. Lieutenant Colonel Godfrey Charles Mundy recorded his visit, describing the inn, its people, and even its famous bottled ale.
As the railway arrived in 1867, everything changed. The coaching era faded, the inn became a private residence known as Wyoming, and by 1937 the historic building had disappeared forever.
Today, almost nothing remains.
Yet beneath the landscape of modern Valley Heights lies the story of one of the Blue Mountains’ forgotten landmarks—a place that witnessed nearly two centuries of Australian history.
Join me as we uncover the remarkable history of The Valley Inn.
