Description
Why Farmers Pour This Red Liquid
This bright red liquid looks almost like blood, and these farmers are pouring it directly onto wheat grains and garlic cloves. But this is actually part of an agricultural process called seed dressing, commonly practiced in China.
The liquid is a seed treatment, often containing fungicides or insecticides that help protect crops during their early growth stages. The red color usually comes from an added dye, making treated seeds easy to identify.
What makes this process interesting is the machine itself. Known as an agricultural seed coater, it uses a rotating mixing system to keep the grains and garlic cloves moving while the liquid is poured in. This helps distribute the treatment across their surfaces without having to coat each one by hand.
For wheat, the treatment can reduce certain seedborne diseases. For garlic, it can help protect the planted cloves from fungal infections. And once treated, these crops are meant for planting, not eating.
