Description
In 1982, Argentina and Britain fought a 74-day war over a remote group of South Atlantic islands.
Argentina calls them the Malvinas. Britain calls them the Falklands. The islanders call them home.
This documentary separates the documented events of 1982 from the competing sovereignty claims: Argentina’s military dictatorship occupied the islands on April 2; UN Security Council Resolution 502 demanded an Argentine withdrawal; Britain sent a task force; and the war ended on June 14 after 907 deaths.
But military victory did not settle sovereignty. In 2013, 99.8% of valid referendum votes favoured remaining a British Overseas Territory. Britain cites self-determination; Argentina maintains that the interstate dispute requires negotiation. In 2026, offshore oil development triggered a fresh legal confrontation.
