Description

In 260 the Roman emperor Valerian marched against Persia and was captured alive by the Persian king Shapur I: the first Roman emperor ever taken prisoner. Rome never came for him. His son Gallienus, now emperor, reportedly just said: "I knew my father was mortal." In Persia, whenever the king got on his horse, Valerian had to kneel so the king could step on his back. When he died, his skin was dyed red, stuffed with straw and hung in a temple, to show every Roman ambassador.
