Description

The United States sent two diplomats to France to buy just one city from Napoleon, New Orleans 🇺🇸🇫🇷 But instead, they ended up making one of the biggest land deals in history: the Louisiana Purchase. At the time, Napoleon controlled a huge territory in North America and had plans to rebuild the French Empire in the Americas. But his whole plan depended on Saint-Domingue, today’s Haiti, France’s richest Caribbean colony, built on sugar, coffee and slavery. After the Haitian Revolution, France tried to take the island back. But yellow fever destroyed much of Napoleon’s army and France lost Saint-Domingue for good. Without Haiti, Louisiana suddenly became too far away, too expensive and almost impossible to defend. At the same time, the United States needed access to the Mississippi River and New Orleans, a key route for western trade. So when Thomas Jefferson offered ten million dollars for one city, Napoleon offered the entire Louisiana Territory for fifteen million 🤯 This deal almost doubled the size of the United States in a single day, for just four cents an acre. #louisianapurchase #louisiana #napoleon #neworleans #mississippi #france #america #unitedstates #americanhistory #ushistory #frenchhistory #europe #weirdborders #borders #haiti #island #history #geography #maps #learn
