Ever heard this mechanical noise on a plane? It can come from the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer, or THS, a system that helps control the aircraft’s pitch balance.
The horizontal stabilizer is part of the tail. Instead of staying at one fixed angle, the THS can be adjusted slightly to help balance the aircraft when its speed, weight, or flight condition changes.
Without trim, pilots might need to keep applying constant pressure to the flight controls to hold the nose at the desired angle. The THS reduces that workload by changing the angle of the stabilizer so the aircraft can stay balanced with much less continuous force.
The system is usually moved by a powerful mechanism connected to a large jackscrew inside the tail section. When the trim changes, that mechanism slowly changes the stabilizer’s angle.
A trim setting is selected before takeoff, but the stabilizer can also be adjusted during flight as the aircraft climbs, descends, changes speed, or burns fuel.
This is one of those aircraft systems passengers may hear working without realizing what is happening behind the cabin walls.
This video is shared for educational purposes to explain aircraft trim, pitch control, and the role of the trimmable horizontal stabilizer.
