Why Canada Has the Weirdest Lake Names 🇨🇦🤯 2 Million Lakes

Canada is home to more than two million lakes 🇨🇦 During the 19th and 20th centuries, Canadian cartographers had to map and officially name them all. Advances in aviation ✈️ and aerial photography made surveying easier, but finding millions of unique lake names became another problem. At first, official maps used Indigenous names such as Athabasca, Mistassini and Nipigon. Other lakes were named after people, including Lake Louise, Lake Victoria and Lake Patricia. But as more lakes were mapped, cartographers began using simple names like Long Lake, Clear Lake, Frozen Lake, Rocky Lake and Mirror Lake 🏔️❄️ They also adopted names already used by local hunters and loggers, creating official Canadian lake names such as This Lake, Another Lake, And Another Lake, Stupid Lake, Crotch Lake and Nova Scotia’s Big Ass Lake 😂 One of the longest is Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake 🤯 Despite looking like a cat ran across a keyboard 🐈‍⬛, its Indigenous name roughly means “the lake where trout are caught with a hook” #canada #canadianlakes #lakes #lakelouise #lakeathabasca #lakemistassini #greatlakes #weirdlakes #strangelakes #lakenames #weirdplacenames #placenames #cartography #maps #northamerica #geography #history #americanhistory #history #geography #geographyfacts #maps #learn
