Description
In a few villages on Croatia's Istrian peninsula, fewer than 500 people still speak Istro-Romanian, a Latin-descended language that split from Romanian over 1,000 years ago. Almost none of them are under 60. This is the story of how it survived, and why it may not last another generation.
Istro-Romanian is one of the four branches of Eastern Romance, alongside Romanian, Aromanian, and Megleno-Romanian. UNESCO classifies it as severely endangered.
