Description
Carthage fell to the Arabs in 698. Yet 450 years later, a geographer recorded people in a Tunisian desert oasis still speaking African Latin.
This is the story of the Romans who outlived Rome in Africa: how Latin took root in Carthage and Gafsa, survived the Vandals and the Byzantines, and faded out of sight after the Arab conquest. The evidence is thin and scholars still debate how long it lasted, but the traces are real, from a medieval geographer's note to the Latin month names Berber speakers still use today.
