Description
In the heel of Italy, hidden in villages most people have never heard of, a small community has spoken Greek continuously for over 2,500 years — since long before Rome existed.
They're called the Griko, and they are living proof that Magna Graecia — "Greater Greece" — never fully disappeared. While the rest of Italy adopted Latin and later Italian, these villages in Salento and Calabria quietly kept their ancestors' language alive through Roman conquest, Byzantine rule, Norman invasion, and Italian unification.
Today, Griko is critically endangered, spoken fluently by only a few thousand people — most of them elderly. This is the story of how it survived this long, what it actually sounds like, and the race to save it before the last generation of native speakers is gone.
