Description
High in the Italian Alps, road signs point to villages that don't sound Italian — and don't sound German either. This is Ladin: a language older than Italian itself, born when Roman soldiers' Latin fused with the speech of the pre-Roman Raetian tribes, then survived 2,000 years of isolation, empire collapse, forced border changes, and Fascist suppression — hidden in five valleys around the Dolomites.
Today around 30,000–35,000 people still speak it. This is their story.

⚠️ Note: speaker population estimates vary by source (30K–35K range cited here); Raetian origins are inferred from indirect archaeological and linguistic evidence, not direct written record.
