Description

📖 More of the kitchen and household habits I keep in my notebook are in my book, Nothing Goes to Waste (e-book and audiobook): https://missevelynsnotebook.com/ Nothing drips. Nothing hisses. The floor is dry. I thought that meant everything was fine, too — until I spent the better part of a year blaming Curtis’s showers for our water bill. Tonight, I’m putting three drops of food coloring in the toilet tank and leaving the handle alone. While we wait, I’ll show you the seven things I check under that lid: the toilet leak test, the flapper, the fill valve, the chain, the things people put in the tank, the water line, and the water meter outside. If you’ve been wondering how to fix a running toilet, we’ll start by finding out which part actually needs attention. There’s the old flapper I’d take to the store in a sandwich bag. The handle you shouldn’t have to jiggle. The brick my mother’s generation used, and the trouble it can leave behind. And a second test for the evening you haven’t got any food coloring in the house. Then we go back and look in my bowl. I have a guess about it, and I don’t like it. The drops help you find the problem; fixing it is what saves the water. How much you save depends on the leak and what water costs where you live.
