Description
📖 The whole pantry — what to buy big, what to buy small, and how long each one really keeps — is written out in my book, Nothing Goes to Waste (e-book and audiobook): https://missevelynsnotebook.com/
Forty years, the same store, the same cart, the same eleven things — and not one of them costs five dollars. These are the pantry staples a Southern household buys in the big plain bag: rice, grits, self-rising flour, evaporated milk, white vinegar, vegetable oil, black-eyed peas, dried beans, salt, sugar, and at number one the one that makes it taste like a Southern kitchen and not like a cafeteria. For each one: what my mother did with it, the small expensive twin sitting beside it on the shelf, and what it replaces.
Then the two seconds that change how you shop: the little number on the shelf tag, the one printed small, and low, and in grey. And the honest limit the other lists leave out — I bought family-size everything one year and threw a third of it away. Buying big only saves money on the things that keep.
None of this is your fault. Nobody taught us to read the little number. They taught us to look at the big one.
