Description
📖 All fifteen keeping times — with the cupboard charts to tape inside a cupboard door: what keeps, how long, and in what — are in my book, Nothing Goes to Waste: https://missevelynsnotebook.com/
Every list this month tells you what to buy before winter. Here are the same fifteen foods — carrots, cabbage, eggs, potatoes, onions, flour, oats, rice, pasta, oil, dried beans, canned tomatoes, stock, salt and spices — and the part the lists all leave out: how much of each is actually enough, for two of you or for a full house at the holidays. It comes down to one sentence you'll hear fifteen ways: buy enough to last until it goes off, or until it's cheap again, whichever comes first.
So this is food storage the way I keep it now: the real shelf life of each pantry staple, which ones the big bag actually makes sense for and which ones it never does, why whole wheat flour belongs in the refrigerator and white flour doesn't, why canned food on one shelf is not all aging at the same rate, and what the four words on the label — sell by, best if used by, use by, freeze by — actually mean, because an expiration date is not what most of us were taught it is. Then the two habits that make every number work: new stock to the back, and five minutes with your coffee once a week. Plus the honest limits, where the rules stop: the one date that is real, mold, pantry moths, the shelf over your stove — and what to do when it's just you and no size in the store was made for you.
The internet calls it pantry organization now. My mother called it keeping a cupboard.
