Description
What would you say if I told you that the Dead Sea could completely disappear by 2100? Here, more than 430 meters below sea level, in the lowest depression on Earth, the Dead Sea is dying.
Nestled between Israel and Jordan, this body of water—so salty you can float effortlessly—is shrinking by about 1.2 meters every year. To grasp the scale of this loss, consider that in just fifty years, it has lost a third of its surface area.
This retreat is leaving behind a landscape of desolation. Ground that literally collapses beneath residents’ feet. Tourist resorts, once jewels of the global spa industry, now stand as abandoned concrete shells in the middle of nowhere. But beyond the ecological and economic disaster, this slow death raises a question that has haunted engineers, geologists, and heads of state for over a century: is it possible to save the Dead Sea?
This urgency has given rise to a large-scale project: a transfer canal designed to stabilize the Dead Sea by channeling water from the Red Sea into it.
In this new episode of Looking 4, we dive deep into the Dead Sea to understand how a balance that lasted for millennia could collapse into a spiral that no one seems willing to stop. From giant sinkholes swallowing the coastline, to heavy industries extracting its last resources, to ambitious cross-border canal projects linking two seas across the desert... this is the story and the possible future of the Dead Sea—the dangers it faces and the final hopes of saving the lowest point on our planet.
