Description

A firefighter returns home from a long shift and is shot to death in his own driveway. The investigation uncovers a secret affair, deleted phone calls, and a murder plot close to home. In another Indiana case, a man preparing to open his dream restaurant vanishes, leaving behind his belongings, his dog, and questions his family has spent two decades trying to answer. In today’s episode of Southern Girl Crime Stories, we cover the 2019 murder of Robert “Robbie” Doerr and the unsolved 2006 disappearance of Walter “Tom” Smith Jr. 🔎 Featured Cases: 🕵 Robert “Robbie” Doerr — Evansville, Indiana On February 26, 2019, 51-year-old Evansville firefighter Robert “Robbie” Doerr returned home after a twelve-hour shift. Deleted phone calls, digital evidence, and testimony from both Becky’s son and Richmond’s son helped expose the plot. A note tucked inside a sympathy card Richmond gave Becky at Robbie’s funeral became another piece of evidence. Becky was convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in May 2024 and sentenced to 90 years in prison. Richmond was convicted in December 2025 and sentenced on February 13, 2026, to life in prison without parole. 🕵 Walter “Tom” Smith Jr. — Shelby County, Indiana In September 2006, 42-year-old Walter Smith Jr., known as Tom, was days away from opening Walter’s Family Restaurant in downtown Edinburgh, Indiana. Before he disappeared, Tom discovered that checks had been stolen from his checkbook and cashed. Over Labor Day weekend, he reportedly confronted the man he believed was responsible.
