Description

A Kentucky attorney is murdered during a carefully planned home invasion by a man fixated on her family’s private shelter. In Virginia, a 16-year-old is found brutally murdered inside his burning pickup truck—and more than three decades later, his killers remain unidentified. In today’s episode of Southern Girl Crime Stories, we cover the 2022 murder of Jordan Morgan in Richmond, Kentucky, and the still-unsolved 1991 murder of Marshall Ray Butler in Henrico County, Virginia. 🔎 Featured Cases: 🕵 Jordan Morgan — Richmond, Kentucky Shortly before 4:30 a.m. on February 22, 2022, Shannon Gilday entered the Morgan family’s home outside Richmond armed with an AR-15-style rifle. Investigators said Gilday had spent weeks studying the house, its security cameras, and the family’s routines. He had become fixated on reaching a private shelter beneath the home because he believed a nuclear catastrophe was imminent. Gilday entered through a second-floor window and confronted 32-year-old Jordan Morgan as she slept. Prosecutors said he shot her more than 20 times. Jordan’s father, former Kentucky state representative C. Wesley Morgan, was also shot during an exchange of gunfire but survived. Gilday fled and was arrested six days later near the Morgan property. He was indicted on six felony counts, including capital murder, attempted murder, burglary, and assault. In May 2026, a jury found Gilday guilty but mentally ill on all six counts. The jury rejected the death penalty and recommended life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. That sentence was formally imposed on August 14, 2026. 🕵 Marshall Ray Butler — Henrico County, Virginia On August 23, 1991, 16-year-old Marshall Ray Butler called his mother and said he planned to stop by her salon for money to purchase parts for his pickup truck. He never arrived. Later that afternoon, firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on the exit ramp from Interstate 64 west onto Mechanicsville Turnpike. Marshall’s white 19
