Description
Scientists say the dire wolf is back.
But the real story is much more complicated.
In 2025, Colossal Biosciences announced that it had brought back the extinct dire wolf using gene editing, cloning, ancient DNA, and living gray wolves. Three pups — Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi — were born with white fur, larger bodies, and skull features meant to resemble the Ice Age predator that disappeared around 10,000 years ago.
But there is a huge problem.
Dire wolves were not just oversized gray wolves. Ancient DNA shows they split from gray wolves millions of years ago and may have belonged to a separate genus entirely. Colossal made 20 genetic edits to a gray wolf genome — but scientists estimate gray wolves and dire wolves differ by millions of genetic changes.
So what are these animals really?
In this video, we explore the science behind the “de-extincted” dire wolf, the 20 DNA edits, the 5.7-million-year evolutionary split, the controversy around Colossal’s announcement, and the question nobody can avoid:
Did scientists really bring back the dire wolf — or did they create something new?
