In 1998, Pope Saint John Paul II stood before the Shroud in Turin and explained that its authenticity is not a matter of faith. Whether the Shroud genuinely wrapped the body of Jesus Christ is a question for history and scientific investigation—not something Catholics are required to accept as doctrine. That distinction is important. The Christian faith does not depend upon the authenticity of a piece of linen.
