Description

Maximilian Kolbe gave his life at Auschwitz so another prisoner could live. That man was Franciszek Gajowniczek, a Polish army sergeant who cried out for his wife and children when he was selected to die by starvation. Kolbe stepped forward and took his place. Gajowniczek survived Auschwitz. He survived the war. But when he finally returned home, he learned that both of the sons he had cried out for that morning had been killed during the final months of the war. He never forgot the priest who had given him the chance to return home. Gajowniczek attended Maximilian Kolbe's beatification in 1971. Then, in 1982, he stood in St. Peter's Square as Pope Saint John Paul II declared Maximilian Kolbe a martyr and saint. The man Kolbe chose to die for lived to see the Church canonize the man who saved him. ▶️ Watch the full story of Saint Maximilian Kolbe on Crown & Palm Chronicles, from his arrest and imprisonment at Auschwitz to the starvation bunker of Block 11 and the extraordinary legacy of prisoner 16670. #MaximilianKolbe #Auschwitz #CatholicSaints #JohnPaulII #CatholicHistory
