Description
Not a single portrait of Christopher Columbus is known to have been made during his lifetime. By 1893, 71 different "originals" hung in Chicago, and they could not agree on his face, his hair, or even his beard.
On October 12, 1492, a man from Genoa reached the far side of the Atlantic. More than 500 years later, we still cannot say what he looked like. His original letters have never been found. His journal survives only as a copy of a summary of a copy. And one old map puts the discovery a full century late, in 1592.
In this episode I count the hands that stand between Columbus and everything we still hold of him: the painters who never saw him, the printers who never signed their work, the scribes who copied what they never held. And two moments, 85 years apart, when someone held up a piece of evidence and said: this is him.
