Description
In 1792, before the survey of the new federal district was even finished, an engraved plan of Washington, D.C. set the Capitol at longitude zero. A second map, said to show the same ground that year, shows woods and pasture. Which paper came first?
This is Part 3 of our Norumbega series. After the ground beneath the White House and the sailor David Ingram's walk through a lost country, we follow what happened to the city he described. One independent researcher believes that city stood long before 1790, and that the fire of 1814 was the end of it.
We look at the official record in full: the Pennsylvania Mutiny of 1783, the Residence Act of 1790, L'Enfant's plan and his $46 estate, Ellicott's survey. Then the strange pairs: two capitals burned within 2 years, Moscow in 1812 and Washington in 1814, two armies that walked in and walked back out, and uniforms on opposite sides that look cut by the same tailor.
The theories in this video belong to the independent researcher whose work it follows. We present them as open questions. Watch, weigh it, and decide for yourself.
