Description

The last ten minutes of my mother's day were the same every night of my childhood, and I could set a clock by them. Not the whole evening. The evening was a mess like everybody's. But the last ten minutes, the ten minutes between the house going quiet and her going to bed, those were the same every single night for as long as I lived under her roof. Six things. Always the same six, always in the same order, always done with the same tired hands. I thought she was tidying, mija. She was standing watch. In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives you the other end of the day, and keeps it as concrete as the morning habits video: six things her mother did in the last ten minutes before bed, what each one was actually for, and where every single one turns out to be sitting in Scripture. All six. She went and checked. • She put out the candle. Not because the vigil was over, but because her watch was. The four watches of the night are named by Jesus Himself (Mark 13:35-37), and she was ending her shift on purpose. • She went to each bed and blessed each child. Not from the doorway. Deuteronomy 6:7 names both ends of the day in one breath: "when you lie down and when you get up." She did both ends without knowing the verse. • She closed the kitchen. The wiped table was a woman saying out loud, with a rag, that the day had a lid on it. "Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:34) And behind it, the manna that rotted when it was hoarded overnight (Exodus 16). • She did not go to bed angry. Plainly, because the verse is plain: "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry." (Ephesians 4:26) Her sentence through the wall was never "we are fine." It was "we are not done, but I am not going to sleep angry at you." • She checked the door and left the porch light on. The candle inside goes out because her watch is done. The lamp outside stays lit, because "her lamp does not go out at night" (Proverbs 31:18), and because the father in Luke 15 saw his son "while he was still a long way off," and you do not see somebody a long way off unless there is light on the road. • The last prayer, at the foot of the bed. Twelve words, most nights. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8) And she holds back the verse her mother was actually living on, the one that explains a woman with every reason to lie awake sleeping like a stone. Stay to the finish. "He who watches over you will not slumber." - Psalm 121:3 💛 A word about the other kind of bedtime video: you have seen them. Dark music, a voice telling you something is waiting for you to fall asleep, that the last ten minutes are a window you had better guard with the right words. I am not going to do that to you at bedtime, mija. My mother did not go to bed afraid and she did not raise me to. Not one of these six is a ritual. There are no words that have to be said exactly right, and nothing that leaves you exposed if you forget it one night. All six are a woman going around her house one last time, setting things right, and then laying it down. They are not a wall she built against the night. They are six ways of handing the night over. I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. Everything here, go and read for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His. If one of the six is going to be yours tonight, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another house at this hour. God bless you, mija. Go to sleep. 📖 Tell me in the comments: what did YOUR mother do last? The very last thing, every night, before her light went off. The door, the stove, the blessing, a prayer you heard through the wall, a thing she said that you did not understand until you were grown. Write it down for me. Tell me your county too, and if it is late where you are, write it in the morning. I read every one. #TheMexicanMothersBible #BeforeBed #NightHabits #BibleStudy #Psalm121 #Ephesians4 #Proverbs31 #Matthew634 #Christianity #Faith #GodsWord #Scripture #MexicanMother #BedtimePrayer #CloserToGod
