Description

How many times are you supposed to forgive someone who keeps hurting you? Peter asked Jesus that question out loud, and Jesus answered with a number that sounds like math but works like a demolition. Deep Made Simple unpacks every layer of Matthew 18.21-35, from Lamech's song of revenge in Genesis 4 all the way to what forgiveness actually frees you from. Peter came to Jesus thinking seven times was generous. By the standards of the day, it was. Rabbinical tradition drew a limit of three from the prophet Amos, and Peter had more than doubled it. Then Jesus said seventy-seven, a number too large to count, and told a story with two debts so lopsided the gap cannot be missed. One man owes ten thousand talents, roughly two hundred thousand years of a laborer's wages. Another owes a hundred denarii, about a hundred days of work. What the first man does with his freedom is one of the most uncomfortable scenes Jesus ever described. That number, seventy-seven, is not random. It appears only once in the Old Testament, in the mouth of Lamech, a descendant of Cain, boasting about unlimited revenge. Jesus reaches back to Lamech's own language and turns it inside out. The number that measured how far vengeance would go becomes the number for how far mercy should go. This study also asks the harder questions. Does forgiveness mean pretending nothing happened? Does it mean walking back into danger? Does it cancel justice? Scripture has real answers, and they are more nuanced and more liberating than the version most people have heard. 📖 KEY VERSE "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
