Description
Everybody remembers Joshua for the walls of Jericho and the sun standing still. So why does the first thing the book of Joshua does with its hero refuse him the side he thought he was on? Here are 7 things you didn't know about Joshua, and none of them read like a simple war story.
On Deep Made Simple we read the book of Joshua slowly, the way its first listeners heard it, and the strange details start to line up. A general who puts his whole army out of action inside enemy country. A civil war called off because somebody crossed a river to ask a question first. A figure with a drawn sword who answers one word.
We also look at where Joshua sits in the Hebrew Bible, what an Egyptian victory stone carved around 1208 BC says about Israel, and why the most famous miracle in the book comes with a footnote to a lost book of songs.
The last items are the quiet ones. A chapter that admits the conquest was never finished, a treaty sworn over stale bread that still bound Israel centuries later, and a coffin that waited four hundred years for a grave.
If you have ever finished something you did not start, or handed on work you could not complete, this book sits closer to your own life than its reputation suggests. Part one of the Joshua list, with more to come.
