Description

R.C. Sproul explains one of the central differences between Roman Catholic and Reformed views of justification: the basis on which God declares a sinner righteous at the judgment. He contrasts Rome’s understanding of justification with the Reformation doctrine of synthetic justification and the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. For Sproul, the issue is not an abstract theological distinction. If God’s final declaration depends on the righteousness found within us, then no sinner can have true assurance before the judgment seat of God. The Reformed gospel rests on something outside of us—the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, credited to those who trust in Him. This is why Sproul insists that justification by faith alone is ultimately justification by Christ alone. The believer is still a sinner in himself, yet stands justified before God because Christ’s righteousness has been imputed to him. Remove imputation, Sproul argues, and you remove justification by faith alone—and with it, the hope of the gospel.
