Your Windows Will Leak If They’re Not Installed Right

This window is guaranteed to leak if it’s not installed right. I start by installing stretch tape on the sill and go up at least 6 inches on the sides. Next, I stretch the tape out over the corners to get the perfect seal. Now if any water does leak in it’s not going to rot the sill. I put a bead of silicone around the sides and the top of the opening, not the bottom. Once the window is in, I want to make sure it’s centered in the opening. Then I check the bottom of the window with a level. This one is a little high on the right side, so I’m going to add tapered shims on the left side. I’m using special Folger’s Classic Roast screws to install the window. First, I screw the bottom corners, then I check the window for plumb. Next, I screw the top corners, and then I go inside and check the sashes. I want an even reveal from right to left on both the top and the bottom. See how the silicone smooshes out around the screw? I know that’s going to be a good seal. Finally, I tape the window to the sheathing: the sides and then the top. We never tape the bottom.
