Esther Chapter 4 | Esther Risks Her Life to Save Her People | Bible Stories Media Network When Mordecai learns of Haman’s decree to destroy the Jews, he tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth and ashes, and mourns publicly at the king’s gate. Throughout the Persian Empire, the Jewish people respond with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Esther hears that Mordecai is grieving and sends clothes for him, but he refuses them. Mordecai then sends Esther a copy of the royal decree and urges her to go before the king and plead for her people. Esther is afraid. Anyone who enters the king’s inner court without being summoned can be put to death—unless the king extends the golden scepter. And Esther has not been summoned for thirty days.
