Description
Police had DNA evidence from the murders of J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett for nearly 20 years—but they didn't know whose DNA it was.
The two 17-year-old friends disappeared after getting lost near Ozark, Alabama, in July 1999. Their bodies were discovered the following morning inside the trunk of J.B.'s car. Investigators recovered biological evidence from J.B. and developed an unidentified male DNA profile, but traditional database searches produced no match.
Nearly two decades later, investigators turned to genetic genealogy. The search eventually pointed them toward Coley McCraney, a local man who had apparently never been a suspect in the case. McCraney voluntarily provided a DNA sample, and investigators said it matched the male DNA preserved from 1999.
In 2023, McCraney was convicted on four counts of capital murder and later sentenced to life in prison without parole.
