Serial Killer Caught After One Motel Murder Exposed 6 More Victims

A serial killer investigation began with one murder inside a Motel 6—and quickly led police to six more women hidden inside abandoned properties. On October 17, 2014, 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy was found strangled inside a motel room in Hammond, Indiana. Detectives reconstructed her final hours and examined her phone activity, which helped lead investigators to Darren Deon Vann. By the following day, Vann was in police custody. But the investigation was only beginning. During questioning, Vann told detectives there were other victims and began directing them toward locations in nearby Gary, Indiana. Police followed his information into abandoned properties, where six additional women were eventually recovered. The seven women connected to the investigation were Afrikka Hardy, Anith Jones, Teaira Batey, Kristine Williams, Tracy Martin, Sonya Billingsley, and Tanya Gatlin. In 2018, Darren Vann pleaded guilty to all seven murders and was sentenced to seven life terms without the possibility of parole.
