In 193 AD the Praetorian Guard murdered Emperor Pertinax, then stood on the walls of their camp and sold the Roman Empire to the highest bidder. The dead emperor's father-in-law bid from inside the camp; Didius Julianus shouted his bids from outside the wall and won with 25,000 sesterces per soldier. Rome hated him, three generals rose against him, his war elephants threw their riders, and 66 days later a soldier killed him in the palace. His last words: "But what have I done wrong? Whom have I killed?"
