Why Michael Carrick Was Right About Mbeumo

This month, Bryan Mbeumo scored twice for Manchester United against Atlético Madrid — as a central striker, a position he'd never played in eight professional seasons. It was the second time Michael Carrick had changed something about Mbeumo that nobody was asking him to change. Eight months earlier, Carrick wasn't even United's manager. He was a pundit on a studio desk, with nothing to gain from being right. And while everyone else argued about whether Mbeumo could score at a big club, Carrick flagged something else entirely — whether he could cope with the size of one. Then the goals dried up. A quiet Africa Cup of Nations. A form dip. The exact moment most managers quietly move a big-money signing on. Carrick did the opposite. He gave Mbeumo more freedom, not less — and kept rebuilding the team around him, month after month, even when the stat sheet gave him every excuse not to.
