Description
For 35 years, the murder of Deborah Atrops remained a cold case—even though investigators had long focused their attention on her estranged husband, Robert Atrops.
In November 1988, the 30-year-old mother disappeared after leaving a hair appointment in Oregon. Two days later, her abandoned Honda Accord was discovered near a wooded area. Deborah's body was found inside the trunk. She had been assaulted and strangled. Robert told investigators Deborah never arrived at his home that night to pick up their infant daughter.
Detectives investigated Robert but couldn't build enough evidence to charge him. Eventually, Deborah's murder went cold.
More than three decades later, investigators reopened the case and turned to evidence preserved since 1988. New DNA testing on Deborah's clothing, reexamined mud evidence, and inconsistencies in Robert's statements gave detectives a very different picture of the decades-old murder.
In 2023, Robert Atrops was arrested nearly 35 years after his wife's murder. In April 2025, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He was later sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
In this episode of Caught By Forensics, we examine the Deborah Atrops cold case, the DNA evidence, the unusual soil evidence, and how investigators used evidence collected decades earlier to finally bring the case before a jury.
What was hiding in the evidence for more than three decades?
