Description

A small camera robot entered the underground passages of Chavín de Huántar, a 3,000-year-old temple complex in Peru. Beyond the accessible ruins lay hidden galleries—and evidence that would help archaeologists understand what happened beneath this ancient ceremonial centre. This documentary follows the Chavín Rover and the archaeological investigation behind the discovery of three underground galleries. We examine how researchers explored difficult-to-reach spaces, what their cameras revealed, and why the material found inside matters. The mystery goes beyond finding another tunnel. What were these spaces used for? What had been left inside them? And how much can the surviving evidence tell us about the people who built and used this extraordinary temple? Drawing on Stanford University’s documented robot exploration and published accounts of the Chavín archaeological project, we trace the investigation from the technology to the discoveries—and explain what is established and what remains unresolved. This video covers documented archaeological work, including the 2018 expedition. It does not present that expedition as a newly announced discovery.
