Description

Before 1914, this land was home to some of the most sophisticated civilizations in African history — and not a single person called it "Nigeria." That name was invented in London by a journalist named Flora Shaw, then stamped onto the map by her husband, Lord Lugard. So what DID people call this land? To the Yoruba, it was Ile-Ife — the sacred homeland — or the domain of their kingdom: Oyo, Ijesha, Egba. To the Igbo, it was simply Obodo — their village, their clan. To the Hausa, it was Kano, Daura, Zazzau. To the Kanuri, it was Bornu. To the Edo, it was the Ogiso Kingdom. And to the Fulani, it was the Sokoto Caliphate — the largest empire in West African history. This video is a journey through the real map of pre-colonial Nigeria — before the lines were drawn, before the flag, before the name. If you want to understand why Nigeria is the way it is today, you have to understand that it was never one place. It was many. 👇 Let me know in the comments: What name would YOU have chosen? 📚 Sources & Further Reading: • The Sokoto Caliphate — Murray Last • The Kingdom of Benin — R.E.
